2014 has seen Transport for London celebrating the Year of Bus with a wide range of activities and installations. As part of this, a series of ‘bus’ sculptures made of fibreglass have been painted by local artists and displayed in boroughs around and in central London. I was fortunate enough to have my design ‘Wide Ride’ commissioned for Croydon’s ‘bus’ sculpture route. This is my original design:
I think the finished ‘bus’ remained quite true to the original design and I had great fun with the mosaic ‘creepers’ and painting it. The sculpture is now situated on a specially constructed plinth in Wandle Park in Croydon and will be on display throughout December 2014. Here are photos of it in the studio once it was painted and varnished:
The ‘bus’ is now on display at Wandle Park in Croydon. Here I am with it and some admiring members of the public!
It will be displayed with the other ‘buses’ in Greenwich in January before being auctioned for charity in February 2015. More facts etc can be found at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/yearofthebus – look for the section Sculpture Trails on the right hand side of the page.
